  • Predominantly paints and coatings are made in liquid form.
  • The liquid consists of volatile and non-volatile contents.

SURFACE PREPARATION INTRODUCTION

Objective:

The objective of this training unit is to gain a thorough understanding of surface preparation prior to application of protective coatings. Also to offer an insight into the various types of surfaces, which may be pre-prepared, prepared and coated.

  • It is widely acknowledged that the type and degree of surface preparation have a major bearing on the performance of a coating system.
  • Most paints and coatings are designed and tested to perform over a surface which is suitable prepared prior to coating.
  • The is no substitute for adequate surface preparation.

COATING TYPES AND SYSTEMS INTRODUCTION

Objective:

The objective of this training unit is to understand the basic constituents and properties of coatings used for corrosion control and gain an insight into coating systems.

  • Coatings are the most widely used method of protecting steel structures from corrosion.
